The French business register

Since 1 January 2023, the Registre national des entreprises (RNE), kept by the Institut national de la propriété industrielle (INPI), has been the single register for all businesses operating in France. It was created by the PACTE Act of 2019. In addition, the registries of the commercial courts (greffes des tribunaux de commerce) continue to keep the trade and companies register (Registre du commerce et des sociétés, RCS).

Numbers

Every business carries a nine-digit SIREN number from the Sirene directory of the statistics office INSEE; every establishment additionally has a fourteen-digit SIRET number.

Inspection and official evidence

The public data of the RNE can be viewed free of charge; the certificate of registration (attestation RNE) is provided free of charge by the INPI and by the government Annuaire des Entreprises. The extract from the RCS (extrait Kbis) is issued by the registries of the commercial courts; for third parties it is subject to a charge via Infogreffe.
