Registers, legal bases and method of working
Company data from European sources
CompanyDesk supports company research on the basis of selected publicly available data, such as name, registration number, legal form, address and status. Which information is available depends on the respective source. The overview does not replace a full review of the company or its powers of representation.
Depending on the data source, information is retrieved through an interface or shown from a previously imported dataset. The time of retrieval and the date of the content may differ. Missing information does not mean that the corresponding entries are absent from the original register.
The registers of the individual countries
Each country keeps its company register under its own name: in Austria the company register (Firmenbuch) of the regional and commercial courts and, for trade licences, the Austrian trade information system (GISA); in Germany the commercial register of the local courts with divisions HRA and HRB and the company register (Unternehmensregister); in Switzerland the commercial registers of the cantons with the central business name index Zefix; in the Czech Republic the Obchodní rejstřík and the Živnostenský rejstřík, brought together in the Administrativní registr ekonomických subjektů (ARES); in Slovakia the Obchodný register and the Živnostenský register in the Register právnických osôb (RPO); in Poland the Krajowy Rejestr Sądowy (KRS) and, for sole traders, the CEIDG; in France the Registre national des entreprises (RNE) based on the Répertoire Sirene; in Ireland the Companies Registration Office (CRO); in the United Kingdom Companies House; in Norway the Enhetsregisteret and Foretaksregisteret of the Brønnøysundregistrene; in Finland the Kaupparekisteri of the Patent and Registration Office (PRH); in Latvia the Uzņēmumu reģistrs; in Slovenia the Poslovni register Slovenije (PRS) of AJPES; in Lithuania the Juridinių asmenų registras of Registrų centras; in Romania the Registrul Comerțului of the Oficiul Național al Registrului Comerțului; in Belgium the Kruispuntbank van Ondernemingen (KBO) of the Federal Public Service Economy; in Croatia the Sudski registar of the commercial courts; in Greece the Γενικό Εμπορικό Μητρώο (ΓΕΜΗ) of the chambers of commerce; in Cyprus the Registrar of Companies. The application queries these registers insofar as they provide an open interface or an open dataset. Currently not connected is in particular the German commercial register; which registers are actually queried, and to what extent, is shown in the overview of connected registers.
Legal basis for data use
The application operates exclusively within the framework of European law on the reuse of public sector information. Its basis is Directive (EU) 2019/1024 on open data and the re-use of public sector information, Implementing Regulation (EU) 2023/138 laying down a list of specific high-value datasets, which designates company and company ownership data as a category to be made available free of charge, and their national implementation, in Austria the Information Reuse Act (IWG). Only sources that permit reuse under an open licence or under the terms of the registering authority are used; the respective terms and attributions are listed in the licence register. Register data are not purchased and not scraped from web interfaces.
What you can search for
- Company name, also as part of the name and in variant spellings
- Company registration number in the form FN 123456a, Czech and Slovak IČO, Polish KRS number, French SIREN, British company number, Croatian MBS or OIB, Greek ΓΕΜΗ number or ΑΦΜ
- VAT identification number and Legal Entity Identifier (LEI), where the respective source holds them
- GISA number with the holder's name for querying Austrian trade licences
What the research is used for
The search supports an initial orientation on business partners and the preparation of master data and contract details. For legally relevant findings, in particular on current powers of representation, the relevant official sources must be checked. Copied information must be checked before use.
Annual accounts and documents
For Austria, the company profile shows the register of documents in a separate section, namely the annual and consolidated accounts filed with the company register court, including balance sheet date and size class. These accounting documents are among the high-value datasets that the Federal Ministry of Justice has made available free of charge since January 2025.
Frequently asked questions
Does the information replace a company register extract?
No. CompanyDesk shows only selected company data. The overview is neither complete nor official and does not replace a current extract from the registering authority.
What does a query cost?
Basic use is free of charge. Without an account 5 queries per day are available, with a confirmed account 10 per day and at most 150 per month. Further features such as the financial analysis are part of CompanyDesk Pro.
Which countries are connected?
Only registers whose connection has actually been set up; they appear in the country selection and in the overview of connected registers. Complete European coverage is not claimed.
Where do the data come from?
The origin of the information is shown with each result. Depending on the connection, it comes from official data sources, open datasets or the LEI index. The terms of the individual sources are described under Data sources and licences.
How it works
-
Origin of the data
Every item of information is shown with the querying authority, the time of the query and the source address. The unchanged response of the register is retained and can be traced if necessary.
-
Fuzzy name search
Variant spellings, legal form suffixes and diacritics are matched. Registration numbers are recognised regardless of format, whether entered as company registration number, register sheet, SIREN or LEI.
-
Use in client work
Register information from this application serves preparatory purposes. Official effect attaches exclusively to the extract of the registering authority.
